Between the university town of Coimbra and the beautiful coastal town of Aveiro lies the wine region of Bairrada. Barely 30km in a bird's eye view, from Agueda, where the northernmost vineyards are located, to Souselas (the southernmost parcels).
The region enjoys the direct cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean and makes full & refined white wines with its local Bical grape. The reds, based on the distinctive Baga, tend towards a nice pinot noir & have an enormous ageing potential.
Bairrada is therefore rightly called "the Burgundy region" of Portugal. It also has a fine tradition of beautiful sparkling wines.
The de Sousa family has been growing grapes for wine on the 12-hectare estate in Ancas for generations, but only bottled the first Sidónio de Sousa wine in 1990.
It is named after grandfather Sidónio de Sousa, here in the middle, with winemaker and son Paulo de Sousa on his right, and grandson Afonso on the left.
A small-scale production, but high quality sparkling, white & red wines, with a rich expression of the typical characteristics of Bairrada DOC. A pretty discovery !
Sidonio de Sousa has one of the oldest baga vines in Bairrada. They still make their wine in the traditional way, which results in juicy, fruity wines. They are aged in old Portuguese oak barrels, which is rare nowadays, even in Portugal.
