Discover how this natural, fresh sea salt from Portugal differs from refined and processed table salts! This artisanal fine sea salt is ideal for seasoning, cooking and curing your dishes. It has been mined by hand from the salt pans of 'Belamandil', in the Ria Formosa nature reserve. This allows practically all the rich minerals such as magnesium & iodine from the seawater to be retained in the final product. This salt contains no allergens or additives.

Necton's facilities in the Algarve, Portugal, are composed by four salt ponds, with 350 pieces. The production of traditional sea salt is done through a unique methodology.

The beginning

Necton started as an algae cultivation company in 1997 in the salt marshes of Olhão, that were abandoned once industrial production methods overtook them. But the microbiologists soon realized the potential in crafting traditional sea salt in these historic salt marshes.

They recruited the few remaining Marnotos (salt workers) of the region, learned their techniques, and began restoring the salinas surrounding their algae farm.

100% natural production

The production of traditional sea salt and the flor de sal (flower of salt) is done through a unique methodology that joins the traditions passed on by the early salt workers. With the modernity of the quality processes, management and innovation, Necton achieves products of excellence.

The location

The Ria Formosa, in Portugal, is a fixed ecosystem, covering an area of around 18,400 hectares along 60 kilometres with a maximum width of around 6 Km.

This protected area considered a Natural Park is protected at the south by the Atlantic Ocean and at the north it has salt evaporation ponds and small sandy beaches.

There are no heavy industries at Ria Formosa which contributes for the high quality of the water. Thus salt quality is not threatened.
